Hello, My name is Garry Younts, and I am a chiropractor and owner of Hawkeye Chiropractic. Please let me share with you my story…
I was born to two loving parents in the fall of 1976, in Panama. At the time my father was stationed there during the US occupation of the Panama Canal. Through out the next 18 years of my life we moved from military base to military base stretching from North Carolina to South Korea, Utah, Washington State and Japan. During my high school years my parents settled in Lakewood Washington. I loved Washington State so much, that I decided to stay and attend University there in the area.
I chose to attend Western Washington University in Bellingham Washington for my undergraduate studies. I chose WWU mainly due to its chemistry program and its location. I can think only of a few places that I have been in this world where you could snowboard on Mt. Baker in the morning and then sail the ocean in the afternoon. (it only happened once)
At western I played Rugby and water polo for the university. I had the rare opportunity to play on 1996 WWU Men's Rugby England Tour and the scars to prove it. Things were going exceeding well until it wasn't. I fractured my right hand. I had a commuted factures of the 3rd & 4th metacarpals, it required surgery and a stint of rehab to repair my to reclaim my full dexterity.
I figured that my athletic days were over at the ripe old age of 21. It was time to get focused on my studies. At this point I started my work in organic chemistry research for Dr. George S Kriz and physical chemistry research for Dr. H. W. Wilson. I was personally thanked for my contribution to very popular text book: Microscale Approach to Organic Chemistry Laboratory 3rd Edition by Pavia Kriz and Lampman. I am forever in their debt for their mentorship that they gave me during my formative years.
After my undergraduate studies I took my first real adult job as a Research and Development chemist at a specialty chemical company for the fruit industry in Yakima Washington. During the winter of 2003 I fell on some Ice and landed straight on my back. At that time, I did not realize this particular injury would shape the rest of my life.
After the fall I was in bad shape, I was miserable, I could not work for two weeks with pain from my neck to my low back limiting everything that I did. I went to my medical doctor, but his limited prescriptions for opioids and muscle relaxers did little to alleviate my pain. After the end of the 2nd week, I decided to seek another opinion, and I am so glad that I decided to take a chance and see a chiropractor. I decided to seek the help of Dr. James Milliron to see if he could help. I was expecting that he could help get me a little my pain intensity, but I was wrong.
My pain relief was instantaneous, 30 seconds after my first adjustment my pain was gone! I was amazed that an adjustment could have such a profound effect on my pain. I started to research this chiropractic thing and realized that that I was completely wrong about what I thought chiropractic was. Over the next couple of months I saw first hand the amazing Doctor of Chiropractic that Dr. Milliron was. He inspired me to sell almost everything that I owned and moved to Davenport Iowa.
I decided to enroll in Palmer College of Chiropractic in the spring of 2005. I could have chosen another chiropractic school that was closer to home, but Palmer College had such a rich history of being the origin of chiropractic. While enrolled at Palmer College I worked as a teaching assistant for the Biochemistry department helping with the lab instruction of Palmer college students. During my last year of chiropractic school, I was later honored with the position of clinical teaching assistant for the Academic Health Center at Palmer College helping Dr. Dennis Malik and Dr. Dennis Lopez.
After graduation from Palmer College I started my chiropractic career for a clinic in Cedar Rapids, working for a chiropractic rehab clinic on Collins Road. After a couple years at the practice, I left to start my own clinic closer to Iowa City. I have been in private practice in this area since 2012. I am married to my wonderful wife Heidi and we have three wonderful children: Hunter, Olivia and Rosemary.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
